Xbox's Advert for "Destiny":
Destiny Interview
Interviewer: Good Afternoon, Morning, Evening Or Night ladies and gents. We are here to interview one of Bungie's lead project managers, Jason Jones, to talk about how effectively their latest game, Destiny, was advertised and distributed.
Jones: Hello, it is great to finally be here.
Interviewer: It's great to have you here too. But let's get on with it, shall we? So back to before when Destiny wasn't even announced, how long did bungie spend developing it?
Jones: Well about 10 years by the time it was released, it started in 2005, were about 5 people worked on it, just getting the basic concept and ideas down, in about 2009 more people moved onto working Destiny which was about the time when we were finished with the Halo series. The game was announced at E3 in 2013 more info was released at E3 2014 and released later that year
Interviewer: So almost 10 years in development and work continues on it to this day, and for another 10 years is how long you want it to last. So when was the game released and what was it available on?
Jones: Destiny was released world wide (excluding Japan) On the 9th of September 2014 for the PS3/4 and the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One, the game was then released in Japan on the 11th of September.
Interviewer: Right. So how could you obtain Destiny and can you still get the game in those ways?
Jones: Well you can get physical copies for the platforms that the game is available on from retailers and supermarkets like Tesco, Game and from places like Amazon and eBay, also digital copies available on the platforms online store, and you can still buy the game in those ways.
Interviewer: So about the DLC expansions, how can you buy those?
Jones: You can buy them on the online console stores, the purchase of the expansion passes from retailers and online stores. You can also buy the "Legendary Edition" from online retails and normal retailers and you can also buy that from the online console stores as a digital copy as well.
Interviewer: That is a lot of ways to get the game, well I guess that is the same with all games these days expect on more or less platforms. Now we shall move onto the advertisement portion of this interview. How was Destiny was advertised that made it so much more different to other video games?
Jones: First off due to a contract between Sony and Activision, Xbox wasn't allowed to advertise the game, but they did find a loop hole so that's good for them, I refer to the perfume poster of course. But Destiny wasn't announced until a teaser trailer was shown in February 2013, and more info was released for it at E3 that year.
Interviewer: So how simple or complex was it for advertising Destiny?
Jones: Well you see, After Destiny was teased we had to advertise it so other people who may be not "hardcore" enough to watch E3 or be that up-to-date with the gaming industry to know about these things, so finding the right time to start advertising so this more "casual" gamers can get hooked and, hopefully, pick up this awesome new game on release. Also we had to make sure that these people know enough about the game to want to get it.
Interviewer: If the rumours for the budget of Destiny were true does that mean that the advertisements for the game also had a lot of budget?
Jones: I can confirm the budget for the game, and the rumours are true, because Activision said so, that is that cleared up. Since we had more budget then all major film releases we used a sum of that budget to create adverts for the game and get them aired or shown on websites. By far the most expensive advert we had was the live action one, for obvious reasons, so it was indeed expensive to advertise Destiny, but I don't have the exact numbers with me.
Interviewer: How was Destiny advertised for the mainstream audiences?
Jones: Well we had the Facebook page and Twitter pages so those ones can be used for advertisement, also sponsoring Facebook and Twitter for the ad spots, and on YouTube of course and finally on Playstation network since Microsoft couldn't advertise the game obviously and it is currently a console exclusive.
Interviewer: Well that's all the questions we have and thank you very much for coming along and thank you for your time.
Jones: I'm glad I could clear those questions up and thank you for having me.
