Analysis of 3 Music Videos

Valkyrie By Battle Tapes

Our House is Dadless By Kid British

Paradise by Coldplay

Practice Music Video

3 Things I've Learned from this Experience

Always use a tripod/shoulder mount/flycam when filming, if you can't only have short shots of freehand filming.

If you have little time to show a narrative, just tell it.

Be extremely careful when editing lip syncing, the footage being slightly out of sync with the music can ruin the whole video.

Similarities and Differences Between 2 different Music Videos.

Paradise by Coldplay ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G4isv_Fylg )

Valkyrie by Battle Tapes ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_V13kbY4yI )

Similarities

Both show the band playing live (it is actually them playing while being filmed).

Both have the band members present with their corresponding instruments.

Both videos have credits at the start like the name of the band, song and the name of the Director (Paradise's is Mat Whitecross and Valkyrie's is Eli Berg).

Differences

Paradise's video tells a story and Valkyrie doesn't really.

Paradise's video also has way more locations filmed at, while Valkyrie only has one location filmed at.

Valkyrie's video has much more use of lighting and editing in post.

Valkyrie is Battle Tapes first actual music video.

Valkyrie also uses a lot of close ups of the band, especially the singer, Paradise does have these shots but not as many.

Paradise has establishing shots and shots of the landscape and Valkyrie doesn't.

Andrew Goodwin's Music Video Theory - Dancing in the Distraction Factory

Music Videos demonstrate genre characteristics e.g. stage performance, dance routine boy/girl.

Battle Tapes' video for "Valkyrie" isn't in the performance genre as no one in the in the video is dancing, or the main focus isn't them. The only dancing is the women that appear briefly in some shots. The lead singer could be dancing but the main focus isn't that as the dancing isn't that well choreographed and he could just be jamming to the music like the other members of the band.

There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screen within screens, mirrors, telescopes) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

Battle Tapes' video does objectify the female form, but no way near to the amount that Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" and Fergie's "MILF $" does, as it is their heads and faces get shown and not really their bodies. So it isn't perfect but is no way near as bad so most videos these days. In a way it could be seen as being empowering as Valkyrie's which is the song is referring to are the "choosers of the slain" basically in a battle they decide who dies and goes to Valhalla and those who get to fight another day in Norse mythology and since they were often depicted in the female form so the females used in this video could be the Valkyries the song is reffering to.

Theres is a relationship between music and visuals either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting.

As stated in the previous statement the women that appear in the video could be the Valkyries that the song is reffering to as the song is called "Valkyrie"and Valkyries are depicted as being female.

Any electrical equipment that falls in the bath
Be extremely careful with electrical equipment, film what is necessary and make sure everyone is clear of the water when finished, also tidy up the location afterwards

Extreme
Call the emergency services immediately, keep everyone away from the scene.

Legal and Ethical

LEGAL

Issue

Solved or justified?

Drug Use

We want to have drug use in our music video; the drugs used will just be antidepressants and antipsychotics. Since these aren’t illegal drugs they shouldn’t be a problem will the law. This does inflict on ethical issues, which will be discussed below.

Copyright

Using the music in our video will inflict copyright, to solve this we found the contact details of the original artist which was the email address, we emailed them asking for permission and a few days later they replied allowing us to use it.

ETHICAL

Issue
Solved or justified?
Drug Use
The use of drugs like antidepressants will inflict on ethical issues because of the seriousness of the topic and that can offend people if we don’t take it serious enough so we have to be careful. Also overdosing on drugs is a serious issue because it can inflict suicide.
Mental Illness
The protagonist of our music video has schizophrenia and if we don’t take it serious enough people can get offended or think that this is what all schizophrenic people are like. So we need to be careful and possibly even research why schizophrenic people are like. We also would like to amplify the seriousness of mental illness; so raising awareness is a good thing.
Suicide
The climax of our music video is the protagonist committing suicide by means of overdosing on antidepressants and since this a very real topic we must take it very seriously because if we don’t people will be offended by it and that is the last thing we want our music video to do. We will also be able to raise awareness of suicide by showing how serious of an issue it is.

Age Rating for Our Music Video

We want out music video to be rated “PG” or parental guidance, this restricts what we can have in our music video but with research into other music videos we found that other music video easily follow what is necessary to be PG rated.

For a music video to be PG rated it needs to have minimal usage of any discrimination, drugs, imitable behaviour, bad language, nudity, threat and violence. Our music video only includes drug use but they are things like anti-depressants, no nudity, no discrimination, no bad language, no threat and no violence is present in our music video. The protagonist isn’t portrayed as being someone young child would want to imitate.

Certification and Scheduling

The music is to promote the artist of the song and to promote awareness of mental illness; because of this we have no need to show the video post watershed because it is of a serious nature.

The music video will be shown on music video channels like Vevo, Viva and 4 Music. Like almost every music video these days we will also upload the music video to websites like YouTube and Vimeo.

A

How did you know the equipment: sound and camera were working correctly - what process did you go through?

We knew the equipment was working because before using the equipment we checked the SD card was clear of any footage so we had the maximum amount of space to take as many shots as we liked. We also checked the battery power so we could use the camera for long periods of time. We set the camera to battery saver mode so if it wasn't used after 20 seconds it would go onto standby to save battery.  There was no need for the sound to be working as we did not need it for our music video.

B

Did you follow the script/storyboard? How yes/no

Before producing the script we brainstormed our ideas and thought of a main concept/ idea to follow. Then planning out a rough plot after that we produced our draft script. Then from developing that we produced our storyboard. When making the storyboard we made sure it was detailed with relevant camera shots and mise-en-scene. Then with the storyboard we added colour to make our drawings more detailed.

C

Did you follow safe working practices? How?

Production:

We followed safe working practises by regulating how much time we spent filming. Actors were not given a high workload, we had regular breaks so we could discuss different things that could improve our production. We also followed safe working practises by not putting members of public (and anyone involved with the production) at risk. For example there was a scene where sam had to ride a bike into the road. Before we shot the scene we made sure that there was no members of the public in the way. We did this because the location is public property so we have to be vigilant.

Post-production:
When at the computer we used premier as our editing soft were. Putting our footage in folders we renamed them. Throughout editing we had regular screen breaks every 20-30 minutes. We also made sure no food and drink was near the computers and keeping our work are clear. Although in the screen breaks we made sure to drink plenty of water to keep hydrated when working also going for short walks outside to move our whole body so no joints cramp or hurt.

At the computer we made sure to be at least 50cm away from our screen. When sitting on the desk chair we kept our posture up right with our back straight. Keeping the computer screen 10 to 20 degrease slanted so it reliefs any neck pain when looking at the screen. The adjustable back rest helped us to keep our posture up right and the keyboard being at elbow hight helped us to easily type without getting strain in our arms. Lastly we always kept the seat high perfect so our thigh where parallel to the floor and the balls of our feet where flat on the floor.

The production process is generally something like 1/ ideas 2/ script 3/ storyboard, and 4/ recces 5/ filming. How did you follow this process, and what did you do differently/went wrong?

We split work the work evenly throughout the project. We first brainstormed our ideas in a group then developing it from there we chose an idea and developed it more. Then two people worked on the script while another two did recce sheets. Once the script was complete we all worked on a page of the storyboard writing. Then we drew in the detailed images.

When filming we did several re shoots as one day the weather wasn't brilliant so we changed round our filming for the day it was raining we would shoot all the shots inside and when the weather was nicer we would film outside to get our shots.

E

What genre did you decide on and what genre conventions did you use?

The song's genre is indie electro which is just electronic music that is created by someone who hasn't signed a record deal.

The genre of our music video is electric. As our music video genre is electric we decided to implement some conventions to make it clear what the genre of our music video is, e.g. we have the lead singer lip sync to the track. We also have coloured lighting and a unique background for the band member to lip sync in.
